Choosing the Right Wattage

100 W suits most turtle tanks and medium enclosures. The right wattage depends on your room temperature and how high the lamp sits above the basking spot. Always check the basking temperature with a thermometer, and raise or lower the lamp to reach the right temperature for your species. Make sure your turtle or reptile has a cooler area to move away to.

Turtle Tank Light and Heat Setup

Use a dome lamp fixture with a ceramic socket rated for at least 100 W – plastic sockets can melt.
Point the lamp at your turtle’s basking platform, above the water.
Keep the bulb well away from the water and splashes, and out of your turtle’s reach.
Check the basking temperature with a thermometer and adjust the lamp height as needed.
Run it during the day only, on a timer, for a natural day-night cycle.
